# Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Iliotibial band syndrome is overuse pain on the outer knee where the [IT band](https://durgical.com/en/anatomy/iliotibial-tract/) rubs over the end of the [femur](https://durgical.com/en/anatomy/femur/), common in runners.

## What it is

Overuse irritation where the iliotibial band rubs over the lateral femoral epicondyle, common in runners.

## Risk factors

- Sudden increase in running distance or intensity
- Weak hip abductors
- Excessive downhill running

## Symptoms and signs

- Sharp or burning pain on the outer knee
- Pain that starts after a predictable distance
- Tenderness over the lateral epicondyle

## Diagnosis

**Clinical**
History and point tenderness

**Imaging**
Usually not needed

## Treatment

**Rehabilitation**
Activity modification, hip and gluteal strengthening, and gradual return to running.
