Taenia saginata !

  • Parasite
  • Exam priority: medium

The beef tapeworm. It lives for years in the gut and causes few symptoms; unlike the pork tapeworm, it does not cause cysts in humans.

Updated 2026-11-01

Also called: beef tapeworm

At a glance

Shape
Scolex with 4 suckers and no hooks (unarmed)
Family
Taeniidae
Type
Cestode (flatworm)
Size
Adult usually up to about 5 m, sometimes much longer

Morphology

  • Gravid proglottid with 12–30 uterine branches per side.
  • Proglottids are motile and may crawl out of the anus on their own.
  • Egg identical to T. solium: it cannot identify the species.

Transmission

  • Eating raw or undercooked beef with cysticerci.
  • Human faeces with eggs contaminate pasture and infect cattle.

Reservoir: Humans as the only definitive host; Cattle as the intermediate host

Isolation precautions

What the care team adds to standard precautions.

  • Standard

Life cycle

  1. The person with the tapeworm passes proglottids and eggs in stool; segments may crawl out of the anus.
  2. Cattle swallow eggs on contaminated pasture.
  3. The oncosphere crosses the cow's gut wall and forms cysticerci in muscle.
  4. A person eats raw or undercooked beef; the scolex attaches to the small bowel.
  5. In about 2 months the tapeworm is adult and starts shedding proglottids.

Virulence factors

  • Little damage: it competes for nutrients and causes abdominal discomfort.
  • Motile proglottids crawling out of the anus cause distress and itch.
  • Rarely, obstruction or appendicitis from proglottids.

Diseases it causes

  • T. saginata taeniasis

Clinical picture

  • Many carriers have no symptoms.
  • Seeing white moving segments in stool or underwear.
  • Mild abdominal pain, nausea, appetite changes.

Diagnosis

  • Proglottids in stool: counting uterine branches (12–30) identifies the species.
  • Eggs in stool or on perianal tape; they do not identify the species.
  • Coproantigen or PCR in reference laboratories.
  • Specimens are handled with care in case it is T. solium.

Treatment

Cestocides: praziquantel (drug of choice) or niclosamide.

Drug class only; doses and regimens are set by the clinician from the current guideline.

In Pharmacology:

Prevention

  • Cook beef thoroughly.
  • Meat inspection at slaughterhouses.
  • Sanitation so that human faeces do not reach pasture.

Test yourself

Think of the answer, then tap the question to see it.

Does T. saginata cause cysticercosis in humans?

No: humans only host the adult tapeworm; human cysticercosis belongs to T. solium.

Which scolex feature separates T. saginata from T. solium?

The T. saginata scolex has no hooks (unarmed); T. solium's is armed.

Why is the egg not enough to identify the Taenia species?

Because T. saginata and T. solium eggs look identical under the microscope.
